Thomas LANFRANCHI
2024

Performance, Film, and Photography, 283  330 cm

Since the beginning of his practice, Thomas Lanfranchi has been exploring spatial volumes through families of aerial forms that rely on the presence of wind. Located near the ocean, the department of Deux-Sèvres enjoys a temperate and humid oceanic climate. The prevailing westerly winds benefit the entire region, becoming steady and consistent from autumn to spring. This flat terrain with gentle reliefs influenced by westerlies generates warm, rising thermals from late spring through summer, ideal for flight.

A mandatory stop along the line of the western coast, this landscape with its ancient clay-limestone soil, once bocage countryside, is now predominantly open agricultural land. It is ideally suited for a celestial project in an uncertain moment where the loss of gravity leaves time in suspense, awaiting a call. In Melle, Thomas Lanfranchi will launch his Module No. 7 if the wind permits, as part of the biennial's opening. The only traces of his performances will be captured in film and photography. The film will be screened at the Melle media library, and a large-format photo will be installed in the public space on Rue Fossemagne.

During the biennial, the Méliès cinema, an event partner, will showcase a selection of filmed performances by the artist before each screening.
